We're going to have to move data to a new 2000 SP4 server. We want to
cluster it down the road, probably Q4 of 2008, but can't do it right now. So
here's my question:
1. What do I have to do to this new server to make sure it can be clustered
about six months down the road?
2. I heard that when I do the install I have to do a named instance even if
that's the only instance on this machine? Is that true and what do they mean
by that?
Any advice would be much appreciated... |

You don't. You must have your cluster built before installing SQL, you can't
do it the other way around.

Read Books Online regarding named instances vs. default instance. It is
highly recommended that you use named instances only on clusters.

yes, the Windows cluster has to be built adding shared storage and
(hopefully) a 2nd node.
But...
Take the existing SQL Server, make it part of that Windows cluster, stop the
services, move the databases to the Shared drive(s) and run the "upgrade"
from the Installation wizard. All this is really doing is copying binaries
to the new node(s), and creating the various registry entries that point to
all the right places.
I'll stop now just trying to be clear to CLM that the new server he is
building can be bumped to a Clustered SQL Server.

Technically, upgrading a stand-alone installation to a clustered
installation is possible in SQL 2000. It is also highly NOT recommended.
There was a good reason the feature was pulled from SQL 2005. I suspect it
was the high failure rate amongst those that attempted it. Those who could
pull it off knew better than to try.
