Yes, install 2005 first, and make sure you specify a custom instance name fr
the second instance (or both). On one of my dev workstations I have
..\EXPRESS2005 and .\EXPRESS2008.

side-by-side ?

Yes I would do this regardless of the edition. My personal preference would
be to install 2005, then SP3, then the post-SP3 CU1, then install 2008 (and
2008 CU2 if desired).
