I downloaded SQL 2008 Enterprise evaluation from Microsoft's site.
According to their site, Enterprise won't install on Vista.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx
I've got it installed on Vista Business and "select @@ version" says
Enterprise. So is it really Enterprise?
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (RTM) - 10.0.1600.22 (Intel X86) Jul 9 2008
14:43:34 Copyright (c) 1988-2008 Microsoft Corporation Enterprise
Evaluation Edition on Windows NT 6.0 <X86> (Build 6001: Service Pack 1)
I'm wondering because we really want Standard version, but there isn't an
eval version. If it really installed Standard on my Vista box then we're in
good shape. But why would @@version return Enterprise?
If it's because Vista Business is really the NT kernel, will I be able to
install SQL 2008 Enterprise evaluation on XP?
Thanks, Andre >> Stay informed about: 2008 Enterprise eval |

Yes, the documentation is wrong and scheduled to be fixed. You *can*
install Enterprise on several operating systems that they currently don't
list, including Vista Business.
However, why would you want to run Standard (or Enterprise) on a
workstation?

For development purposes. We actually want it on XP, until we get our new
server that will run Windows 2008. We have a project that we're chomping at
the bit to start and we really want to do it on SQL 2008. The db will be
larger then 4GB, which is why we can't use Express, in case that was your
next question.

I have no idea, I am not responsible for updating the documentation. I am
just a customer like you... In fact I might have read about that in this
very group, so am privy to the same information you are.

There is no evaluation version for Standard, only for Enterprise. You
downloaded Enterprise, installed Enterprise, and are running
Enterprise. You should have no trouble installing the evaluation
version on XP; the Developer edition is essentially the same as
Enterprise, except for the licensing, and I am running that on XP with
no problems.

Developer Edition is released for this purpose. As Roy mentioned, it has all
features that Enterprise Edition has. The only difference is licensing
terms.
Also, Developer Edition's license costs about 49$. This edition of SQL
Server seems a better choice for you.

Note that, by my understanding at least, that is one license per
developer, even if only one instance is being shared by all the
developers. Of course the only definitive word on licensing comes
from Microsoft.

That's correct, at least that's what Microsoft Licensing documents say.
