Look at the CNS plug-in SMTPit. It enables filemaker to send eMails.
Be careful of CANN SPAM, you need to understand the law before you go
emailing 1,000 contacts.

Yes you don't want to get your server blacklisted so if you do decide
to use FileMaker be sure to follow the guidelines in the CANN SPAM
Act. I recommend a service like Constant Contact. They have great
reporting, hundreds of templates, you can schedule your launches and
track all of your emails. I manage my FileMaker Newsletter - with
about 7200 subscribers right now through Constant Contact. The nice
thing is you can keep the information in FileMaker. Simply export the
information you want to use in Constant Contact as a CSV file and
upload it.

You can also set up groups so you can segment for different markets
and send to small groups quickly and easily. I use this for my beta
testing groups etc.

If you need great reporting, templates and ease of use, you wont go
wrong with Constant Contact. I am in no way affiliated with them, but
have been a happy paying customer for over 4 years.

I've used QIOS Pelican and it works fine. Just dump your list from
Filemaker to CSV and you're all set. I also have used PostCast Server
which bypasses your ISP's SMTP. A high enough volume of legitimate
(i.e. non-spam, opt-in, authorized) email going out can be a potential
problem for some ISPs so PostCast can be a good idea. These are both
shareware, I think the licensing for both was around $50.00.

A. Recent versions of FileMaker can be scripted to send emails to any
number of addressees in your database.

As to the content of the message, that is another matter. Plain text is
the least bothersome. Hypertext with bouncing animate things is the most
annoying. PDF is somewhere in between.

Yes, FM can, but if you need to send out 400, it takes quite a while.

I use one record per email (as they are customized). it takes appx 2
second per email to be queued in Outlook Express. so 400*2=800sec or 13
minutes.

but in a batch situation (all messages the same) it takes the same amount of
time. I do not want any message to show all the other recipient.

When you get in the thousands, it needs to be done outside of outlook.
