Post subject: Q about DB2 Express-C and Admin Tools
Archived from groups: comp>databases>ibm-db2 (more info?)

Greetings:

I saw a news article about DB2 Express-C running on Ubuntu Linux. I have one question about the DB2 Express-C edition: Do the usual DB2 admin tools (which come with DB2 workgroup edition for example)
work and come with DB2 Express-C edition that may be installed on another system - be it a Linux or Windows system?

Ubuntu Linux server edition is a text only interface, so I am thinking IBM has this covered that there is some provision to be able to install the DB2 admin tools on a admin workstation and remote
connect to the DB2 Express-C server. At least I hope so! Wink

Might indeed be incentive for us to upgrade our in-house development server, and this time install on an Ubuntu Linux server.

TIA!

Yes, you can install DB2 Express-C on a Windows machine and remotely control
your Linux databases with the supplied GUI applications. You could also just
intall the Data Server Client (which has no database engine, but just the
client software and GUI tools).
You can get the client here:
http://www-933.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/swg/selectFixes

There is also IBM Data Studio 2.2 which is a separate GUI interface that is
free (the old GUI interfaces are not going to be enhanced and are being
phased out).

This lead to a "No results found - Information Management, IBM Data Server Client Packages (9.7.*, Linux 32-bit,x86)" screen...

Seems if I go this route...

"Download IBM Data Studio (stand-alone)
Red Hat Linux, SUSE Linux, Windows V2.2.0.1"

Which there is no Ubuntu installer.

My main development box currently runs Ubuntu 9.04.

Currently I am getting to DB2 admin tools via a VM session running Windows... so would like to get rid of the need to fire the VM up if possible.

Thanks very much!

Try this, and then navigate to the latest fixpack.
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=71&uid=swg27007053
IBM websites are brutal and not all pages can be bookmarked.

That link is certainly worth bookmarking for now! Thanks!

Seems there are many choices... lots to learn with our upgrade / platform migration project. Smile

One last question, can I simply download "V9.7 Fix Pack 2" code to install, or do I need FP0 installed, then update to FP2?

Thanks very much!

You can install FP2 right away. Every FP package code has 3 install options
(Unix, Linux):

../db2setup GUI installer
../db2_install manuall installer (installs everything)
../installFixpack upgrade to fixpack level

On Windows there is one installer that handles either the installation or
upgrade of DB2.

You might be interested in an article I saw on the Register today about
Ubuntu shipping DB2 Express C as part of it's upcoming server release.

The article was at
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/07/21/ibm_canonical_db2_ubuntu/

I just skimmed it but it may have some useful info for you about what you
are asking.

As already mentioned, you can install the latest fixpack only. Just remember
that only the clients are free and come with a perpetual license. The other
versions that have a full database engine(except DB2 Express-C that you
download elsewhere) come with a 90 day free trial license that will expire
unless a valid license is installed.

Keep in mind that this does not apply to DB2 Express-C. You cannot apply
fixpacks to it and must follow the upgrade instructions included in the
latest DB2 Express-C release you are installing (there will not be a DB2
Express-C release for every fixpack release).

Also, be sure to save any DB2 Express-C images you may need, because as soon
as the next release of DB2 is available, the old DB2 Express-C images will
be removed from the IBM website.

Thank Mark for the warning.

Yes I am in the habit of stashing a copy of any software I deploy.

Sincerely,

That's only the default installation. You can load up X (with Gnome,
KDE or whatever) from the Ubuntu repositories if you wish. Not that you
would want to do this if this were an out-and-out database server, but
for a hybrid machine most useful.

Speaking about DB2 on Ubuntu, the one thing which can't be installed
easily is TSA/MP (Tivoli System Automation for Multi-Platforms) : the
cluster management software which you would use to control the full
automation of failure detection and failover in an HADR cluster. It is
totally integrated with DB2 and a utility called db2haicu makes the
configuration and maintenance of the cluster easy. The problem is that
it is still packaged as RPMs, whereas the DB2 software itself moved over
to tarballs a long while ago. In fact the TSA/MP installer even stops
you installing it automatically on anything other than SLES and RHEL
(even CentOS doesn't work with the installer even although the RPMs
install perfectly using the "rpm" command directly).

This isn't a big issue for a free copy of DB2 Express-C, where HADR isn't
licensed, but for any other edition (including the subscription version
of Express where HADR is included) this is a big problem.

I've been asking IBM for a while to address this. Maybe the deal with
Canonical will allow this to be sorted once and for all.
