It states the systems must be homogeneous..what happens if you need to
do an OS update (upgrade levels) or even update the IDS? Do you have
to take all systems down to do this?

Also, I read something similar for HDR...is that the same?

For HDR

a.. Both servers must run the same Informix version
a.. Both servers must be able to run the same Informix executable. Ubuntu
and Red Hat run the same Informix executable, HP/UX and Red Hat do not.
a.. Both servers must have network capabilities
a.. The Secondary server must have at least as much disk space for dbspaces
as the Primary. The dbspace chunk types (cooked or raw) do not have to be
identical
a.. Dbspace chunk path names must be identical

Enterprise Replication does not have these limitations, you can replicate
from a 64 bit Unix box running IDS 11.5 to a 32 bit Windows box running IDS
10.0, or in the less severe case you can replicate between two servers
running different upgrade levels.

ER does not require homogeneous systems.

HDR, RSS and SDS currently do. This may or may not change in the future.
I know I've moaned like a stuck pig precisely because it forces big bang
upgrades.
