Post subject: Installing SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>sqlserver>fulltext, others (more info?)

I am attempting to install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition (which came
with Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition) on Windows XP Professional
SP2. Here is what happens when I try each of the following:

1. Right click \autorun.inf and select Install:
A dialog comes up saying "Installation failed."

2. Double click \splash.hta:
\splash.hta opens in Notepad

3. Open \default.htm with Internet Explorer and click x86-based operating
systems:
I recieve the following warning:
An ActiveX control on this page might be unsafe to interact with
other parts of the page.Do you want to allow this interaction?
If I click Yes I recieve the following error:
A Runtime error has occurred.
Do you wish to debug?

Line: 175
Error: The system cannot find the file specified.

Why is it so hard for me to do the installation? I previously installed SQL
Server 2005 Express with no problems at all (I uninstalled all components of
it before attempting to install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition), so I
would think it would at least take me to the installation wizard to tell me
what the problem was. And problem #3 above says it cannot find the specified
file, but the intire product is on a single DVD, so I know I didn't delete
any of the files for the installation (if there is a file missing from my
machine, what is it?). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well, may be my suggestion would be over-simple, but have you tried running
the Setup.exe?

That idea did occur to me, but there are multiple setup.exe files on the
DVD. The ones that seemed like possibilities to me were:

\SQL Server x86\Servers\setup.exe
\SQL Server x86\Tools\setup.exe

I have not tried either of these files because I do not know which one is
the one that I want. But what I really want right now is to install the way
Microsoft intended (using the \autorun.inf and splash.hta files). I think
the problem has something to do with the fact that the *.hta file extension
is not registered on my machine, therefore splash.hta opens in Notepad
rather than do whatever it is supposed to do. What is this something I need
to fix, and if it is, what should I do to fix it? Thanks.

Yes, the one that was supposed to work first is that default.hta file which
contains some kind of index that redirects you to SQL Server Upgrade Advisor
installer or some documentation.

However, to install an instance of SQL Server 2005 you'll hit a link on that
index which runs the Setup.exe which is in the Servers folder. So, it's
enough for you to just running this Setup.exe in Servers folder.

If your *.hta extension are not associated with Microsoft HTML Application
Host, then it won't work so you'll need to associate that extension
yourself. To do that, simply open your default.hta file with mshta.exe which
is in Windows\System32.
