I am just reading up on this sql notification services and have a
question. Has anyone used this for the basic use of just firing
events when data changes? I need an event framework that we can
easily add new events and this seems to be a good model for it. I'd
like to be able to register a new event and possibly just call a web
service or similar.

SSNS is a very flexible tool that can be used in a wide variety of
situations. Sometimes it's the best tool out there for a given problem,
other times there exist a better alternative.

If you can elaborate a bit on your requirements, perhaps we can help
determine whether SSNS makes sense for it.

What I need to do is send an email to a person if a metric in SSAS hits a certain value. I have a created a scorecard in SSRS but it currently lacks any kind of alerting functionality that would email a manager if a metric exceedes a certain value. I know BSM can do this but I dont want to have purchase it. Can an alert type functionality be easily built in SSRS (using data driven subcriptions maybe?)? Is there some other way to easily do this?

I have read that Notification Services will not be in SQL Server 2008 and that some of the functionality will be moved into SSRS so if this is true I would rather not build something in an application that has a limited life.

Bob is right. Since my original reply, Microsoft has quietly announced
that SSNS will not be in Katmai. That's terribly disappointing to me, but
unless they change their minds, it's the state of things. So, I would not
invest a great deal of time creating new instances at this point.
