Post subject: SQL Server 2008 express ODBC connection HELP
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>sqlserver>odbc (more info?)

I've just installed SQL server 2008 express edition.
I created a simple DB and waned to test ODBC connections to it.
I can not connect to the SQL sever from a remote machine using the SQL
Server ODBC driver. I keep getting " connetion failed errors". It is
not a firewall issue. both server and remote pc are on same LAN with
no firewalls turned on.
The remote can connect to other SQl Servers ( 2005 ).
When i create an ODBC conection on the same PC the server is running
on I can connect to the SQL server without a problem. So
authentication is OK.
using Servername\databasename as the Host name and i'm using SQL
authentication. The server is setup for both wondows and SQL
authentication.

I'm stuck!

Even it's not a firewall issue, you must open ports on both machine (Server
and Client if you're using Windows XP and Windows Vista). Find out which port
the SQL Server is using.
