Hello Robert ,
Thank you for contacting Microsoft Online Community Support. It is Mark, a
SQL Server Engineer. I'm glad to assist you with the issue.
For this case, you indicated that you would like upgradeSQL 2005 to SQL
2008. Is it correct? If anything I misunderstand, please tell me directly.
It will help us to resolve this issue quickly. Once the issue resolved,
I'll appreciate your verification.
Based on the current information, our SQL Server MVP engineer has helped to
resolve the issue(fail to pass Support Rules step) already. That's great.
It is the precondition to upgrade SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008.
Besides, would you help to confirm if the upgrade(SQL Server 2005 to SQL
Server 2008) completed? Please run the following command to verify.
select @@version
If you would like to figure our the root cause of the issue(fail to pass
the Support Rules), we need the setup log to analysis further. If it is
convenient, please provide me your email address. I will open a work space
for you.
If you have any questions or concerns, please tell me.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you
Best regards,
Mark Han

Note: The MSDN Managed Newsgroup support offering is for
non-urgent issues where an initial response from the community
or a Microsoft Support Engineer within 1 business day is acceptable.
Please note that each follow up response may take approximately
2 business days as the support professional working with you may
need further investigation to reach the most efficient resolution.
The offering is not appropriate for situations
that require urgent, real-time or phone-based interactions or complex
project analysis and dump analysis issues. Issues of this nature are best
handled working with a dedicated Microsoft Support Engineer by
contacting Microsoft Customer Support Services (CSS) at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/subscriptions/support/default.aspx.
