I'm trying to upgrade my SQL2005 Dev Ed to SQL2008 Dev Ed. When the Setup
Support Rules step is run, it constantly fails the Restart computer rule.

I have restarted the computer several times now, but the failure is still
reported. What it is failing on, and how check why, and how can I clear this
failure ?

System :

Windows Server 2008 Std x64 with 8GB RAM
..NET 3.5 with SP1
VS2008 with SP1

That is likely a leftover from a previous SQL install

Try this:

Open Regedit
Find the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager"
Rename the "PendingFileRenameOperations" value to
"PendingFileRenameOperations2"
Restart your machine and then try again

There was an entry in this registry key, some sys driver for a printer. I
cleared the field and the rule now passes.

Might be a good idea if the log report why the rule failed.

Thanks for you help Geoff

select @@version

If you would like to figure our the root cause of the issue(fail to pass

Hi Folks

I'm also encounter this problem.
When i try to install Sql Server 2008 enterprise, i als do see the message:
Rule "Restart computer" Failed.
After several reboots, i' still do see that message.
I've looked for a solution on the internet, but nothing is helping me, even
clearing some entries in the registry.
I do have a brand new pc with Vista Business installed. I've also McAfee
installed, but i've turned it down for the installation.
Could anyone help me?

Hello Joep,

I encountered this problem several times but they were SQL Server 2005
installations. However, I'll try to explain you the common scenario so that
you may find a way to solve your problem.

A prior halted installation may cause this. In this case, I go to Control
Panel's Add\Remove Programs and then select Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and
click the Change button. Then a different window appears and asks you to
continue installation. So, the halted installation is completed and you can
upgrade this instance or install new instances without getting this
"Restart" necessity.

As I told you, I have not experienced this problem in my SQL Server 2008
installations yet. I hope it works for SQL Server 2008 too.
