What version of SQL are you running? What you may want to try is to create
a database with the same files as this one, stop SQL copy the .dat or
..mdf/.ndf/.ldf files to a working hard drive while SQL is stopped. Start
SQL, and if the database comes up suspect, try changing the status of the
master..sysdatabases table to an online status. It is a tricky thing, but
at least worth a shot before going to hard drive recovery services.

When doing backups that you don't have time to validate, my best
recommendation is to always to a disk backup, then copy it to tape. It is
very easy to corrupt a tape format, but you have more flexibility with
trying to get a disk backup to restore. Of course that is an easy cop out
on my part since that assumes there is a working hard drive with enough
space.
