Hey Tony -
Not sure I'm following you on this question...Sounds like you want to
prevent the disabling of an instance if its event provider is not
submitting events?
I don't think that's possible, but maybe I've misunderstood the
question. Can you give a bit more details?
HTH...

Hi Joe,
You are corect in your interpretation of my question.
I am developing an application and I know there will be long periods where
nothing get submitted to the system especially until users become aware of
the existence of the system. I notice during development that I occasionally
get messages saying that the application is disabled because no events were
submitted. So I wondered if there was a way to stop the application from
being disabled!

Hmm....haven't seen this myself. But I'll try to set it up.
What exactly is the message? And where is it, in the event log?

It looks like events aren't being submitted because the instance is
disabled, rather than the other way around.
You can enable the instance using nscontrol:
> nscontrol enable -n TestInstance
As I understood your initial posting, the instance is sometimes
spontaneously disabling itself. If this is the case, please see if there are
any messages in the event log from NS indicating a problem.

Ahh....Okay. As you probably already know, the NS$<InstanceName> windows
service is what actually runs the event provider, generator, and
distributor components for a SQLNS instance. Since the one service
controls multiple components for the instance, you have to enable the
components you want to run on that box. To do this, you use the
"NSControl enable" command where you can specify one or more of the
components (or omit the components parameter altogether in which case it
defaults to all components).
I suspect the problem you're seeing is a result of having the service
running, but the event provider component was disabled. You can check it
out by typing
NSControl Status -name <InstanceName>
in the NS command prompt.
Also based on our other recent conversation, the event provider
mentioned above refers to the hosted event providers; non-hosted event
providers are not controlled by the NS$<InstanceName> service.

You were correct in that you have understood my posting. I have two
applications that both get started as part of a larget test harness whenever
I build the system. I will check if the application is disabled for any
reason but I believe it to be started. I will check!

Oops....missed Colin's reply and accidentally split the thread. Looks
like he came to a similar conclusion (See my other post).
You can check the status by typing
NSControl Status -name <InstanceName>
in the NS command prompt.

Thanks,
Like I said I have a fairly automated test harness that I use to start and
stop the services and components etc running from VS.NET 2K3. That works
quite well and has worked well for some time.
I have one Service running 2 applications. It is while developing/debugging
one application that I noticed the errors about the other application I
showed the error for. So I am saying that one application works fine and the
other appears to stop. I haven't explicitly disabled any of the
applications. The problem now is that I can't reproduce the error because I
have since restarted my server as a new starting point and the error has not
yet occurred.
I will be looking out for the same again but will check the status as the
time the error occurs.
I will report any outcome.

Hopefully it was just a one-time snafu and you won't find it again.
