Is there a technique or utility to produce a file layout containing
the field name, field type (char, date, etc),
maximum length etc without having to examine each field and/or the
data entered for that field.
We are doing some data importation and trying to determine the data
characteristics and boundaries
I am running FileMaker Pro 5.0v3 on a Windows machine.
Any ideas, tips or suggestions greatly appreciated
Sincerely
George >> Stay informed about: determining or producing field names & definitions |

Sure, go into Define Fields, and print the field list for each file. FM
5 was a while ago but you should find a Print button on the define
fields dialog screen. You'll get field name, data type and other info,
such as calculations, validations, etc.
FWIW, FM text fields do not have inbuilt field length limitations.
Those must be done with validations, which don't fire until after the
field is exited.
You can also print scripts, should you desire to do so.

I'm not sure about the Windows version, but there's no Print button in the
Mac's Define fields window ... BUT you can choose Print from any Layout in
Browse or Layout Modes, and then in the normal FileMaker Print window there
is the option to choose to print the field definitions, scripts, etc.
