So I have a database and I am storing pdfs and jpgs, and I hjust hit hte 2gb limit and then the file stopped opening. Sad

Luckily, I had only entered about 30 new records since the last backup when it was under 2gb.

So now that I am going to have to use a file reference instead of actually putting the file in the container field, is there a way to make "make file Reference" the default option? Right now, I have to do Insert then click the file location and check the file reference box to make it a file reference as opposed to just dragging the file over to the container.

Oh, also that if the latest versions of fmp does this, as minor as it may be, it's new a huge process for us so it might add some more reason to justify getting a new version. Smile

I think that if you script the process, you can store that reference
preference in the script and it will be remembered.

However, I agree that what you should do is upgrade to FM9. That gives
you 8 terabytes of space, and the ability to import (references or
really) whole folders of images.

I would allways choose for referenced storing (except GUI graphics). As it
seems you have a lot of objects stored inside your file, you have to rely on
good backups. One corruption and the file might be inaccessable. The stored
files with it. When using references you would only have lost the FMP file,
not the stored files. (Backups still essential ofcourse)

Then again there will me somebody else who swears by storing. It is all just
a matter of opinion. My version with about 5000 jpg's referenced is up and
running stable since version 7. (before that FMP-filesystem was quite
different, so V7 required a rebuild)

Keep well, Ursus

Another option to ever-growing filesizes is to simply archive old data.

Make sure you first do a back-up of the full database before you start
deleting records!!

Then you can Save As a copy of the database and delete out all the 2008
records from the copy, for example, leaving an archive database of
20007's records. Then back in the original database you can delete all
the 2007 (and earlier) records leaving just the 2008 records currently
in use.
