Hi all,
I have a Windows XP SP3 box with VS2008 SP1. I am trying to install all the
sql 2008 client tools on my machine and was able to successfully run the
first part of the install where it installs the windows xp hotfix and then
asks you to reboot.
However, once the machine rebooted and I went back to launch the setup
program and it just wont launch. I double click on setup.exe, a small
command prompt box flashes and nothing happens. I have rebooted several
times and its still the same issue. Nothing in the Event Logs. Any ideas?
Thanks >> Stay informed about: cannot install sql 2008 on windows xp |

Hello
Thank you for contacting Microsoft Online Community Support. It is Mark, a
SQL Server Engineer. I'm glad to assist you with the issue.
For this case, you indicated that you would like to install SQL 2008 on XP
SP3. Is it correct? If
anything I misunderstand, please tell me directly. It will help us to
resolve this issue quickly. Once the issue resolved, I'll appreciate your
verification.
Based on the current information, please try to install the SQL Server 2008
by command prompt. For example:
1 Start->Run->type "cmd"
2 type the following
Setup.exe /q /PID=<validpid> /ACTION=install /FEATURES=SQL,Tools
/InstanceName=MSSQLSERVER
/SQLSVCACCOUNT="REDMOND\stplab"
/SQLSVCPASSWORD="FillPassword"
/SQLSYSADMINACCOUNTS="BUILTIN\ADMINISTRATORS"
To better understand the issue, I need the following to analyze, if it is
convenient, please provide me your email address. I will open a work space
for you to upload the files;
1) SQL Server setup log
By default: it shoule be located at %programfiles%\Microsoft SQL
Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log\ - - send the all file in that folder with
zip format to me.
2) please tell me what step of the install process were you taking, when
the install process ask you to reboot ? A screen-shot will be better
3) what version of the SQL Server 2008 is installed? For example, RC0 or
RTM?
If you have any questions or concerns, please tell me.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you
Best regards,
Mark Han

Mark,
Yes, I would like to install SQL 2008 (tools only) on my Windows XP Sp3 box
which also has VS 2008 SP1 installed.
Here are the steps I followed:
1. Double clicked on setup.exe.
2. A prompt came up telling me that .net 3.5 sp1 and windows installer 4.5
are pre-requisites. FYI, I already had .net 3.5 SP1 installed since I have
VS 2008 SP1 installed already.
3. It then invoked an installer that installed a hotfix - KB942288-v3
4. It then prompted me a message stating that a pre-requisite is a reboot
and to restart the computer and re-run setup.
5. I rebooted the computer and then tried to go back and re-launch the setup
by double clicking on setup.exe but nothing would happen - black command
prompt window flashes, but nothing happens.
I have rebooted several times since and re-tried with no luck. I also
manually tried the following command at command prompt but nothing happened
as well
C:\MSDN\en_sql_server_2008_developer_x86_x64_ia64_dvd_x14-88839>setup.exe
/action=install /features=tools
My email is

(Remove all the ".", "_" from the text above.)
Thanks

Do you have anything in the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Bootstrap
The value is "BootStrapDir" and if it is empty or invalid this might explain
why setup is exiting at that point. Can you delete the above key and
reboot, then try setup again?

Hi Aaron,

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL
Server\90\Bootstrap\BootstrapDir = "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\"

Hi,
I'm facing the same problem during SQL Server 2008 R2 installation on a Windows XP workstation. After installing the pre-requisites and rebooting the machine, clicking the 'Install new instance' button doesn't do anything. A small dos window appears for a second and disappears but nothing happens after that.
Has this issue been resolved?
Regards,
Naresh
