Seedcode has marvelous calendar products, which have gantt-like screens
to display timeslots.

Thanks Lynn, I already had a look at the product. I really think he did an
excelent job. But to modify this to my needs would require almost the same
amount of work as a new built would take. My main challenge is that all
these charts are based on 'office use'. Short time projects that will be
resolved within days. Since I'm trying to track events in history i'm
talking about many years for some projects to complete (the building of a
cathedral). With the current solution the scale gets way of the screen and I
would loose any coherent view. It would need a major overhaul to fit to my
needs.
