It seems that most universities in America are continually asking
their alumni for funds. Some universities in England have taken up
the campaign too (mine has). Are they financially viable? Given the
vagaries of government funding, possibly not. Does the fact that they
ask targeted people (people who benefitted from their services in the
past) to contribute to their continued function mean that they are
bad?
How does that differ from the WikiMedia Foundation (Wikipedia etc)
asking people who use its services to support it?
(I sent them a small donation. Wikipedia is a very good source of
information - not always perfect, but usually pretty reliable.)
