I have SQL 2005 x64 and need to install SSMS on x86 system. When I try to
run the install from the CD, I get an error: 'D:\Setup.exe is not a valid
Win32 application'. I've been looking for x86 version of SSMS but can't find
anything.

You can't run 64 bit apps on a 32 bit OS. You need to go and find the
32 bit CD.

Thank you for the response, but I can see I was not clear in my question.
What I mean to ask is:
Because our SQL x64 purchase only contained x64 CD’s , which cannot be used
on x86 systems, where/how can I download the x86 version of SSMS?

Did you try running from the \Tools\ subfolder on the disc, instead of the
main setup from the root? This should allow you to install the client tools
(which are 32-bit no matter where you put them).

Thank you very much for the response.
I did not try that, but when I checked the disk(s) I only found three
folders (1033, redist, and setup). None of them contained a Tools subfolder.
My hopes were high : )
Do you know the name of the tools installer file?

I think the standard response to the question is to call your local MS
rep, and ask them to send you an x86 CD. The tools are indeed 32-bit,
but the installer on the x64 disc for them is not.

Or get a devedition CD of SQL 2008 for 50 USD.

I haven't seen a retail disc of SQL 2008, but the one I've got from MSDN
has all three architectures on them, so I would not expect this to be
an issue for SQL 2008.

The tools setup is also called setup.exe, unfortunately. I am looking at my
MSDN DVD from July 2006. I am on vacation and pretty far from the office,
so I cannot check any retail media that is x64-only (I don't think we even
have any of those). How many instances of setup.exe can you find on the
disc? What other folders are they located in? Is there a "Disc 2" hiding
somewhere (in some cases the tools need to be installed from Disc 2).

But as we heard internally the MSDN discs and the retail discs are very
different. Richard was very surprised when I told him about a related issue
that highlighted the differences between retail and MSDN.

Even though Client Tools are 32Bit, the Setup (Setup for tools) would say
something like "processor type is not valid".

So, you can order the media from your vendor or you can download the
Evaluation Edition of SQL Server 2005 and install the client tools using
this edition's Setup. Even if you'll be installing the tools from the
Evaluation Edition' s Setup, there is no a usage period for tools; tools are
not expired.

Just simply download it from Microsoft Download and then open the ISO file
using a Virtual Drive Manager or burn it to a DVD and then run this file:
"D:\Tools\Setup\SqlRun_Tools.msi". You should choose Management Tools from
Client Tools from the Features to be Installed (or something like this)
window.
